Piercing 101: A Guide to Caring for your Ears

My most recent video of the same title as this blog post talks about how to care for your newly pierced ears and at-home remedies for irritated and infected piercings.

There are many elements to looking after your ears. When it is just pierced it is likely to be tender, red, and slightly swollen for a few days. This is normal because your ear has just gone through "trauma" and I use this word in a medical sense. For the first few days, it is sensible to take extra care with your piercings, especially with not banging your ear, sleeping on your ear, and getting your hair or clothing caught in the piercing. It's also useful to make sure to keep your ear completely clean from shampoo, conditioner, and any other product that may irritate the new piercing.

When you first get a piercing you must:

- Get an aftercare solution from the salon/piercer (or use salt water)

- Use sterile gauze to apply the solution

- Use the solution 2x a day for 6 weeks

- Twist the earrings 360 degrees for the first 6 weeks

- Leave the earrings in for minimum 6 weeks before removing or changing

It should be noted that most piercings take 6 months to a year to fully heal. My last piercings were in November 2019 and it was only in July 2020 that they are now fully healed.

If you find that your ear piercing is getting hot, red, swollen, itchy and there is white or green pus then you must treat the piercing immediately. This could indicate that your piercing is infected. Simple at-home care remedies can usually heal the piercings. If you use these steps and do these solutions 2-3 times a day for a week then the infection should clear up.

- Using saltwater solution or a sterile saline solution spray to clean your ear

- Using camomile tea to soak your piercing and your ear

- Using an after-care ear solution to clean the piercing fully

If the infection does not clear up please consult your doctor.

The cause for infections can be because something has got into the piercing such as dirt or hair, or a product. Or it can even indicate that you are allergic to a certain type of metal. The most commonly used metals for piercings are titanium, sterling silver, and gold. These tend to be the best metals for your ear, however, some people are still allergic to the metal.

Even when your piercings have fully healed it is always good to still clean them at least once every two weeks. Make sure to not get them caught on clothes or a pillowcase when sleeping and be careful to use good metal jewelry that you clean before each wear.
